This was my first thought when I saw the new poster with the title. I even had a little evil Moffat cackle over it.
It’s a literary reference.
It ties directly into the ‘rose’ symbolism this whole series.

We first see The Meddling Monk in another companions’ intro episode, The Time Meddler.
Steven Taylor is quite skeptical of the Doctor at first, but more importantly, he also shares a first line (in a previous episode) with a certain Miss Oswin Oswald:
“Are you real?”
the meddling monk COINCIDENCES i think NOT classic who doctor who the time meddler I watched this one like a month ago why is everything about oswin connecting with steven taylor? IF IT IS BECAUSE HE AND MOFFAT HAVE THE SAME NAME I WILL LITERALLY FIND MOFFAT AND PINCH HIM VERY HARD ON THE NOSE moffatDoctor Who Series 7.2 Trailer

I have this suspicion that Moffat called Lara Pulver and said “Greetings, The Woman! Could you pop over for an hour or so today? Need a quick favor.”
I remember Mary Tamm’s first appearance so vividly - the ice Queen on the TARDIS. The Time Lady who thought the Doctor was HER companion.
Perfectly brought to life by Mary, with such style and wit, you always thought she could have kicked the Doctor out of the time machine and got on with the adventure herself. A generation of little girls threw away the idea of being an assistant, and decided to fly the TARDIS for themselves.

adding to my list of reasons if we’re ever going to have a female Doctor it’s gonna be with the Moff.
