If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment. -Marcus Aurelius Antoninus

Unlike hedonism, stoicism rejects the notion that the goal of life is to seek out pleasure. In fact, it is about being at peace with what happens to you by undergoing physical and mental self discipline. It is about being emotionally calm and reducing excessive emotional reactions.

You live every day as your last. You realize that nothing can be taken away you if you live a mindset of poverty. You find the reasons why you feel emotions and eliminate the irrational. It’s a powerful mindset.

I could write a whole blog on the aspects of stoicism, but I’d rather write about my day to day practice of the philosophy. If you want to learn more than that, read the original writings of Seneca or Marcus Aurelius and not anything you read online. Be aware that there are many groups that have corrupted the meaning of stoicism. In the process they justify their own questionable opinions under the umbrella of stoic thought.

“Literary experience heals the wound, without undermining the privilege, of individuality. There are mass emotions which heal the wound; but they destroy the privilege. In them our separate selves are pooled and we sink back into sub-individuality. But in reading great literature I become a thousand men and yet remain myself. Like the night sky in the Greek poem, I see with a myriad eyes, but it is still I who see. Here, as in worship, in love, in moral action, in knowing, I transcend myself; and am never more myself than when I do.” —C.S. Lewis (An Experiment in Criticism)

“Even though Madison was unsentimental, he was every bit as intense as his more inspirational friend. Those who write about the American founding are dead wrong when they make Madison stiff and stilted. And some historians have rendered Jefferson so placed and elegant as to deprive him of spontaneous moments. Men and women who observed them at their most relaxed, in close quarters, remarked that Madison’s facility for conversational humor sometimes led him to make Jefferson the butt of a joke, and Jefferson to laugh so well that he nearly cried.

Guys guys guys this image is so adorable.

Things like this help me remember history really happened, every single day— and wish that I had a TARDIS.

“I hope no one who reads this book has been quite as miserable as Susan and Lucy were that night; but if you have been - if you’ve been up all night and cried till you have no more tears left in you - you will know that there comes in the end a sort of quietness. You feel as if nothing is ever going to happen again.” —C.S. Lewis, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
